Walking Aids For The Elderly (3 Wheel Mobility Scooters To Consider)

Let’s be honest, as we age, there will come a time when walking becomes a bit of a challenge. The human body goes through a lot of changes as we age, but these changes should not be allowed to affect our quality of life or the confidence we have in our ability to walk. Assisting the elderly with walking aids in order to make them more mobile and independent is a task we shouldn’t shy away from.

The fear of seeing our elder ones experience a fall of some sort can sometimes be a cause for concern. This cause for concern is very understandable, since a fall for someone of advancing years can cause damaging health and fitness consequences. The good news, however, is that there are numerous walking aids for the elderly out there.

Retaining some level of independence at a later age has both mental and physical benefits. Having that ability, at a later age, to undertakes routines tasks such as shopping and strolling for some fresh air around the neighbourhood does a lot of good.

Mobility scooter

Walking aids for the elderly come in different forms, with different abilities and price range. Walking aids for the elderly include, walking sticks, walking frames, wheelchairs, and mobility scooters. There are 5, 4 and 3 wheel mobility scooters currently on the market.

Our focus today will be on 3 wheel mobility scooters, how effective they can be and some 3 wheel mobility scooters to consider getting for your elderly loved ones.

A mobility scooter is basically a mobility aid equivalent in appearance (and end-goal) to a wheelchair but configured like a motor-scooter. They are usually battery powered. Mobility scooters have in recent times become a common sight in our neighbourhoods and streets. The growing decrease in the stigma associated with their usage has made mobility scooters very popular as mobility aids for the elderly.

Why 3 Wheel Mobility Scooters?….

Frankly speaking, 3 wheel mobility scooters are not as stable as the ones with 4 or 5 wheels. 3 wheel scooters are not the best for going uphill or for going over uneven terrain outdoors. However, the growing popularity of the 3 wheel scooter is mainly due to its maneuverability. 3 wheel mobility scooters have low turning radius, giving them the added advantage of being better at negotiating tight turns and going through tight spaces.

The 3-wheeled mobility scooter tends to be lighter. Compared with the other types of mobility scooters, the 3-wheeled mobility scooter is the best choice for usage indoors, in stores and on paved streets.

What To Consider When Choosing A Mobility Scooter…

  • Purchase price, maintenance and repair costs.
  • What it is needed for (Roads, pavements, outdoor or indoor use).
  • How often it will be used.
  • Availability of storage space.
  • Whether it can be placed in a car.

Mobility scooters can be hired at some shopping centres as well as some visitor and tourist centres. If you don’t fancy borrowing or hiring them and would want to have one for yourself or your loved ones, they are widely available for purchase on various high streets and online.

Just like number 6 above, storage capacity on this mobility scooter is indeed an issue. It has a front storage cage for shoping but its capacity is not ideal. More work required here.

BUY THIS PRODUCT or not, the final decision is yours to make!

Word Of Caution…..

There are 2 types of mobility scooters: Class 2 (can’t be used on the road except where there are no pavements) and class 3 (can be used on the road).

For a class 3 mobility scooter, the law requires the following features:

  • Maximum speed of 8 mph
  • A speed setting for 4 mph (for pavements and other off-road use)
  • A horn and rear view mirror
  • A complete set of working lights (Indicators, front and rear lights, hazard lights and an amber flashing light)
  • Working breaks
  • Maximum weight of 150 kg, without you on it.
  • Maximum width of 0.85 meters.

Mobility scooters do not require a road tax, but class 3 mobility scooters need to be registered with the DVLA.

You are not legally required to have an insurance for a mobility scooter, but it is recommended since you MIGHT find yourself liable should there be a collision.

As stated earlier, the final decision as to which type of mobility scooter fits your requirement is yours to make.

  1. Thank you for testing so many mobility scooters for us. I have been wondering about those. A lot of people do use them on the road and I thought they were a bit unstable. As I read you agree, 3 wheels are mostly for inside the house and paved roads. Thanks for the advice. I’ll cary on my search.

    • Thanks Nanda. Mobility scooters are much stable than you initially thought. I wish you all the best in your search, and I hope my review will make it easy for you to know exactly what you are looking for. See you here again soon.

I wonder if a person has a medical illness or ailment that requires the use of a mobility scooter, if health insurance plans will cover a percentage of the cost or even the total cost…
Interesting article.. thanks for the share…

  4. Thanks for sharing this informative post. The scooter that can adjust seat height armrest sounds great. I know the 3 wheel mobility scooters are not as stable as the ones with 4 or 5 wheels, but I think it is more flexibale for elderly people.

    • Yes, the 3 wheel mobility scooter might not be as stable as the ones with 4 or 5 wheels, but what gives the 3 wheel scooter that extra tick in the box is its ability to make better tight turns. It is also ideal for indoor home use.
Thank you for the comment and I hope to see you here again soon.
